i am NOT paranoid

I don’t have enough beer to update the firmware on this phone!!! Here I am having my second beer. I still have about 3 for backup, unfortunately it gets close to midnight and I’ll have to go to bed soon.

For the last few hours I was fighting to update the damn firmware on my Nokia E63. I don’t have a data cable and it can’t be done via bluetooth. I do have a data cable at work - but over there some ports are blocked or something, and I can’t use the Ovi application to update - it fails with No internet connection (funny, since it was able to download the firmware).

Therefore, I have to get the data cable at home, and try from there.. but at home I have no Windows, and Ovi Suite doesn’t work at all via WINE. So, that’s why I was struggling for the last few hours to make VirtualBox work on one of my linuxes, install a windows XP, install Ovi, and update the firmware.

Why it took me so long? I could not find the original XP disk for my laptop, but a version I made via Vlite.. and it had no driver for the network card. Fix that. Then, I could not enable the USB devices (although I had them in the devices list, as readonly - permission issues, I had to do a logout, but forgot). I finally get all the stuff working.. start the update.. then it aborts, because the damn battery was too low. Too low? It was about half, today. Well, what do you know.. connecting via the USB cable draws all the damn battery! (this is more stupid, because you can only charge it via the power connector, not via an USB cable!)

So.. in the end.. I really get pissed off about this Symbian/Nokia thing. They were supposed to be among the best. But using this phone.. really makes me wonder! Software is good, but not so great. Quality is good, but again not so great. PC software.. not so great at all. Damn this! At least, is usable as a normal phone.. but then.. there are a bunch of ‘normal’ phones out there. (oh, and.. today I get a new phone at work, a Nokia 6303 or something.. it has the same dreadful headset, but.. it comes with a small data cable! Why my E63 - which was supposed to be a business phone - doesn’t have one of those?)

AAAAnd!!! I hate the audio quality when using ear buds! I was happy about that 3.5 jack, but no more. Compared with my old SonyEricsson W880 (which was a Walkman, indeed), it totally sucks. AAAAnd! It totally sucks when using it with my bluetooth car kit. (and so it happens that I know why - but that is no excuse. SCO or not, I can barely have the people on the other end hear me - and with the Sony Ericsson, I had no such problem)

So.. it makes me wonder if I made the right choice to go for this phone. I wanted something useful, and that just works. And.. it is. But apparently the small details do make a difference! I don’t know… I had some reasons to go for this phone - although I was tempted about the Androids (the Hero :D Yum!)

Anyway, until then.. I am curious about the new firmware.. only if I could get it installed! (failed 2 more tries, for different reasons..)
